This site is located south of the village of Çambel; northeast of the town of Kemalpasa in İzmir Province. . R. Meriç reports that the mound can be found on a 1:100;000 map by Nif Stream; near Nemrut Bridge. There is an orchard on part of the mound. The mound was discovered by R. Meriç in 1987 during his surface survey of the Izmir-Manisa-Aydin Provinces. The site is believed to have been inhabited continually from the Late Neolithic to Antiquity. It has been reported that Hacilar VI Late Neolithic-Early Chalcolithic ceramics were found. No other information has been provided. The site is believed to lie on a Roman trade route. The site was revisited and investigated by a team under Z. Derin during the fieldwork of Bornova-Kemalpaşa (İzmir) Archaeological Inventory. All of the Neolithic potsherds are handmade and homogeneous in forms. Paste color is light reddish brown or light red. Sand; grit and white mica tempered examples are common and also there are lots of straw tempered ones. They are mostly moderately or bad fired; but well fired fragments are also collected. Slip colors are same with the paste color; but cream and reddish yellow coated potsherds are collected too. Most of them are burnished. Direct rimmed and high necked pots and direct rimmed bowls are characteristic forms. There are no paint; relief or incised decorations on the collected material [Derin-Batmaz 2005]. |
